This animation was made for Outerspace Landscape Architects as part of a tender process articulating their concepts and ideas for Kingston’s Ancient Market Area and the new cultural quarter. Their proposal centred on creating an uncluttered carpet of quality stone that would allow multi functional use; from a reinvigorated market to new cafes, restaurants, street theatre, festivals, concerts and even weddings.
The landscape design set out to solve a number of issues within the current Ancient Market Area and recommend an appropriate public realm as a focus for its regeneration. At it’s core was the principle that the public realm should serve as a flexible and attractive ‘carpet’ to support and enable a range of market and cultural activity. Activity brings spaces to life and has a huge effect on the success or failure of a place. Here we have the opportunity of creating a cacophony of sound and vision through the market stalls, street performers, cafes, theatre, historical tours, craft fairs, art exhibitions, music events, concerts, European markets, festivals and university graduation days.
